JAY — Jaaron Shaw, owner of Maine Dojo, 5 Intervale Rd., has opened a new fitness center.

The cost is $25 per month with a one time $25 fee for a KeyPass. With the pass, there is 24-hour access to the facility 365 days a year.

“There are no contracts. You can cancel at any time for any reason,” Shaw said. “I’m offering a full facility at a reduced cost. I want to help people meet all their New Year’s Resolutions for weight loss and fitness goals.”

Shaw said his center is 5-10 minutes away for many, rather than the 40-45 minutes they currently travel.

He said other area fitness programs each offer different things. Shaw would like to offer other options, such as small group classes, in the future.

The large equipment room has an automatic lighting system which activates once motion is detected. The front wall is filled with machines that target the back and abdomen. Another wall features every piece imaginable for the arms.

The back wall is taken up with leg presses and other machines for leg work. Weights up to 50 pounds and kettle balls line the last wall. Two machines in the center of the room can be programmed to meet an individual’s needs.

Exercise bikes and other machines geared towards strengthening the heart and lungs and improving endurance are found in a separate cardio room in the back.

When Shaw was looking for something to fill dead space at his facility,he found a bunch of used gym equipment for sale. He later purchased more equipment from a gym in Farmington that went out of business.

“I have more equipment that doesn’t fit. I have awesome students who helped me lug things in,” Shaw said.

The upstairs is now used for storage. Shaw offers karate classes for ages three and older. Some classes have a waiting list.

“There is plenty of room to expand. I wanted a space with plenty of room to expand, the option to get bigger and better,” Shaw said.
